How to Correctly Apply CE Marks and HIN on RIB Boats

How to Correctly Apply CE Marks and HIN on RIB Boats

CE Mark Requirements

The CE mark must be affixed to every RIB that has undergone RCD conformity assessment. The requirements are specific:

  • Minimum height: 5 mm, though most manufacturers use 20-25 mm for visibility
  • Proportion: the letters C and E must maintain the prescribed geometric ratio
  • Visibility: must be visible, legible, and indelible
  • Location: typically on the builder plate, which is permanently attached to the boat
  • Notified body number: the four-digit identification number of the notified body must appear immediately after the CE mark when Module B+D is used

The CE mark must not be placed on products that have not completed conformity assessment.

HIN Placement and Format

The Hull Identification Number must be:

  • Located on the starboard side of the transom, within 50 mm of the top
  • Permanently marked by engraving, moulding, or stamping into the hull
  • At least 6 mm character height
  • In the ISO 10087 format: MIC + serial + month + model year
  • Protected from paint, adhesives, or fittings that could obscure it

A secondary hidden HIN should also be placed in an undisclosed location for anti-theft purposes.

Builder Plate Content

The builder plate must display:

  • CE mark and notified body number
  • Manufacturer name and address
  • HIN or serial number
  • Design category (A, B, C, or D)
  • Maximum number of persons
  • Maximum load in kilograms
  • Maximum engine power in kilowatts
  • Recommended pressure for inflatable tubes

The builder plate must be made of a durable, corrosion-resistant material and permanently fastened to the boat.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • CE mark too small or with incorrect proportions
  • HIN painted over or hidden by fittings
  • Builder plate affixed with adhesive alone (must be mechanically fastened)
  • Missing notified body number next to the CE mark
  • Design category on the plate not matching the technical file
  • Builder plate using a non-durable material that degrades in marine environments

Verification Checklist

Before accepting delivery of a RIB, confirm:

  1. CE mark is present with correct notified body number
  2. HIN is legible, correctly formatted, and in the right location
  3. Builder plate data matches the technical file and Declaration of Conformity
  4. All markings are permanent and weather-resistant
