RCD Technical File for RIB Boats: What Must Be Included
What Is the RCD Technical File?
The technical file is the complete documentary evidence that a RIB boat meets the essential requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive (2013/53/EU). It must be compiled by the manufacturer and retained for 10 years after the last unit of the model is placed on the EU market.
Required Documents
General Arrangement and Design
- General arrangement drawings showing overall dimensions, compartment layout, and tube configuration
- Construction drawings for hull, deck, and tube attachment
- Design category justification with reference to operating parameters
Stability and Buoyancy
- Buoyancy calculations per ISO 6185 or ISO 12217
- Stability test reports demonstrating compliance at the claimed design category
- Freeboard measurements at maximum load
- Inverted buoyancy data (for capsize recovery)
Material Certificates
- Fabric certificates (PVC or Hypalon) with batch numbers
- Hull material certificates (GRP laminate schedule or aluminum alloy certificates)
- Adhesive and welding consumable certificates
- Hardware and fitting material certificates
Test Reports
- Pressure test results for inflatable compartments
- Airtightness test records
- Drop test or impact test results (as applicable)
- Fire resistance test data (for fuel system components)
Risk Assessment
- Hazard identification covering all foreseeable risks
- Risk mitigation measures for each identified hazard
- Residual risk evaluation and acceptance
Owner Manual
- Comprehensive manual per ISO 10240 covering operation, maintenance, and safety
- Design category limitations clearly stated
- Maximum load and capacity information
- Emergency procedures and capsize recovery instructions
Conformity Documentation
- EC type examination certificate (Module B)
- Quality system approval certificate (Module D, if applicable)
- EU Declaration of Conformity
- HIN register
10-Year Retention
The entire technical file must be maintained for a minimum of 10 years from the date the last unit of that model is placed on the market. National authorities may request access at any time. Failure to produce the file on demand is a compliance violation.
Building a Complete Technical File
Missing documents are the most common reason for conformity assessment delays and notified body rejections. Start compiling the file during design, not after production begins.
