RIB Tube Adhesive Systems: RCD Compliance Proof in Technical Files
Why Adhesive Documentation Matters
The bond between a RIB tube and its hull is one of the most critical structural connections on the vessel. A failed adhesive joint at sea can cause tube separation, rapid loss of buoyancy, and catastrophic instability. Under the RCD, adhesive systems must be documented in the technical file with the same rigor as hull structure and stability data.
PVC Adhesive Systems
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) tubes use solvent-based adhesives that chemically weld the fabric layers. Key documentation requirements include:
- Adhesive type and specification — manufacturer name, product code, and technical data sheet
- Application process records — temperature range, humidity limits, open time, and cure schedule
- Bond strength test results — peel strength and shear strength measured per EN ISO standards
- Shelf life and storage conditions — expired adhesive produces substandard bonds
PVC adhesives typically achieve bond strengths of 3-5 N/mm in peel. Test records must demonstrate consistent results across production batches.
Hypalon Adhesive Systems
Hypalon (CSM) tubes require two-part adhesive systems — a primer and a topcoat that cure through chemical cross-linking. Documentation must cover:
- Primer and topcoat specifications with batch traceability
- Mix ratio accuracy — deviations of more than 5% from the specified ratio compromise bond integrity
- Cure time verification — Hypalon bonds require 24-72 hours to reach full strength depending on temperature
- Environmental controls — humidity and temperature logs for the bonding workshop
Hypalon adhesive bonds typically exceed 5 N/mm in peel. Test reports must show that production bonds meet this threshold consistently.
Material Compatibility Proof
The technical file must demonstrate that the adhesive system is compatible with all bonded materials:
- Tube fabric (PVC or Hypalon with base fabric specification)
- Hull substrate — gelcoat, GRP laminate, or aluminum surface treatment
- Seam tapes and reinforcement patches
- Valve flanges and fittings
Compatibility is proven through accelerated aging tests. Samples are subjected to salt spray, UV exposure, and thermal cycling before bond strength retesting.
REACH Compliance for Chemical Substances
Adhesives contain chemicals regulated under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals). Documentation must include:
- Safety data sheets (SDS) for all adhesive components
- Confirmation that no substances of very high concern (SVHC) exceed threshold limits
- Registration numbers for chemical substances manufactured or imported above 1 tonne per year
- Compliance declarations from adhesive suppliers
Missing REACH documentation creates a compliance gap that EU market surveillance authorities will flag during inspection.
Bond Strength Test Records
Every production batch should generate test records including:
- Date and operator identification
- Batch numbers for adhesive and fabric
- Environmental conditions during bonding
- Peel test and shear test results with pass/fail criteria
- Statistical process control data for trend monitoring
These records support the production control system required under RCD Modules B+D and B+C.
