What Safety Warnings Must a RIB Owner Manual Include Per ISO 10240?
Why Safety Warnings Matter in RIB Manuals
Under the Recreational Craft Directive (2013/53/EU), every CE-marked boat must be supplied with an owner manual conforming to ISO 10240. Safety warnings are not supplementary content — they are mandatory compliance elements. A manual missing required warnings can invalidate the CE marking and expose the manufacturer to product liability claims.
The Signal Word Hierarchy
ISO 10240 adopts a four-level signal word system aligned with ISO 3864-1:
- DANGER — Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. Used for imminent threats like explosion, carbon monoxide, or electrocution risks.
- WARNING — Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. Used for probable risks like man-overboard scenarios or tube overpressure.
- CAUTION — Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury. Used for risks like pinch points, hot surfaces, or slippery decks.
- NOTICE — Addresses practices not related to personal injury, such as property damage or equipment malfunction.
Each signal word must appear in its designated color and format: DANGER in red, WARNING in orange, CAUTION in yellow, and NOTICE in blue.
12+ Mandatory Warning Categories
ISO 10240:2022 requires warnings covering the following topics at minimum:
- Tube inflation pressure — Maximum working pressure, overpressure consequences, and cold-weather pressure increase
- Overpressure relief — How pressure relief valves function and what to do if they activate
- Man-overboard prevention and recovery — Specific procedures for RIBs given their low freeboard and tube interaction
- Kill-cord (engine safety cut-off switch) — Mandatory use, correct attachment, and consequences of non-use
- Drain plugs — Installation before launch, removal for storage, and consequences of incorrect fitment
- Fuel vapor and fire risk — Fuel system inspection, ventilation requirements, and refueling procedures
- Carbon monoxide — For RIBs with enclosed cabins or semi-enclosed console areas
- Electrical hazards — Battery installation, circuit protection, and shore power risks
- Propeller strike — Engine start procedures, swim platform warnings, and person-in-water protocols
- Stability and loading — Maximum load compliance, weight distribution, and trim effects
- Towing and being towed — Towing bollard load limits and correct bridle attachment
- Trailering — Weight limits, tie-down procedures, and tube protection during road transport
- Cold weather operation — Tube pressure management, ice loading, and fabric brittleness
RIB-Specific Focus Areas
RIB manuals must address risks unique to inflatable collar boats:
- Tube-to-hull joint integrity — Inspection points for adhesive bonds and mechanical fasteners
- Chamber isolation — Multi-chamber design means one puncture should not disable the boat; explain baffle valve function
- Overinflation during sun exposure — Ambient temperature rises can increase tube pressure by 15-20% above cold-fill values
- Reboarding over the tube — Correct techniques using grab handles and boarding ladders
Formatting and Placement Requirements
Warnings must appear in the relevant chapter, not consolidated in an appendix. Each warning must include the signal word, a concise hazard description, the consequence of ignoring the warning, and the required action. Pictograms from ISO 7010 and ISO 3864 should supplement text warnings where applicable.
